Second toe longer, big toe turned in. Such feet revered by the Greeks as being
bodily personifications of the Euclidean Golden Ratio.
Foot becoming triangle.
Lucretia’s Toe is an inquiry spurred by the experience of a Cranach painting of Lucretia seen by chance on a museum wall. Hill-Carroll works to recuperate the Roman heroine whose rape and subsequent virtuous self stabbing was exploited for erotic subject by many in the Renaissance but particularly by Lucas Cranach the Elder. He painted her boneless sex doll-style upwards of fifty five times. Time spent in Cranach’s digital archive produces photographs of painting stills and leads to still lives made in the studio. Odd foot made still life. A rock stands in. The pyschosexual gesture held. An audio monologue and a silent video montage move Lucretia’s Toe toward release.
MAEGAN HILL-CARROLL is an artist and writer based in Vancouver, Canada. Recent exhibitions include Myths at Wil Aballe Art Projects, Green Puce at the Platform Centre, Muniment Monument at WAAP, Matter and Trace at CSA and Makeshift at Gallery 44. She holds an MFA from the University of California Los Angeles and a BFA from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, where she grew up building houses. Hill-Carroll has exhibited in Los Angeles and across Canada. She was the 2010 Barbara Spohr Memorial Award winner. Hill-Carroll’s writing been published in Fillip, Capricious and the Chapess.
